Varkiza

Varkiza is a coastal cosmopolitan suburb of Attica on the coast of the Saronic Gulf and is a famous tourist resort. The landscape around the settlement is reminiscent of a classic Attica countryside landscape with several pine trees, some of which even shade the sea.

It was a small fishing village inhabited during the 20’s by the families Argyroudakis, Kafourou, Sarantopoulou, Patsoulinides, Papageorgiou, Zisimopoulou and others.

Varkiza was a recreational area, a place for one-day excursions, but it also had a kiosk, a grocery store owned by Kamperis. There was also the ‘Papaspyrou’ tavern at Kanaria and the ‘Elato’ of Kamperis. At that time there was no public transportation and there were donkeys. The children were being vaccinated in a permanent parked bus in Vouliagmeni. It is noteworthy that the National Bank was sending a bus once a week and banking transactions were done this way. This is where the ship owners Maltezou and Katsoulakou had their holiday homes. The latter greatly supported the fishermen when natural disasters wrecked their boats. Back then there was no port in Varkiza. Another ship owner was the Dellis family who built the small church of Panagia that we still have in Varkiza. Furthermore, the family of the legendary person for the press, Christodoulopoulos, who later founded the Athenian Press Agency. A shack also housed the elementary school which was a one-room schoolhouse. This meant that all the classes were together in one room. The shack was given to the school by Katsandris.

During the 60’s the very well-known café ESPLANADE, the restaurant Tresoli and the very well-known bakery Georgiadis opened. Later in the 1960s there were only 3 buses, a pirate one and a regular taxi. At that time there was only one pharmacy in Varkiza.
